UN: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari hailed Pakistan on Thursday after it was elected to the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Bilawal tweeted, “Great news from New York! UN General Assembly elected Pakistan to ECOSOC for three years.
He tweeted, “Congratulations to our UN team in MoFA and our Mission in New York for running a successful campaign.”
The South Asian nation received 129 votes in the 193-member assembly. Pakistan became a member for three years on January 1, 2024.
Iraq, Japan, Nepal, and Tajikistan competed for three Asian seats, including Pakistan. Elections required 124 votes.
In an interview with APP after the election, Ambassador Munir Akram said, “We hope to play yet once again our active role in the forum of ECOSOC by fostering agreement on the structure and content of new, more dynamic and equitable structure of international economic cooperation.”
Moreover, He added that Pakistan would help build consensus on crisis recovery and SDG achievement.
Ambassador Akram also thanked his team at the Pakistan Mission to the UN for their efforts in securing this election.
“I feel privileged to represent Pakistan as an advocate of strengthening the UN development pillar. As well as Pakistan attaches great importance to ECOSOC.”
Japan received 127 votes and Nepal 145. Iraq, with 50 votes, and Tajikistan, with 120, failed.
While, Pakistan has presided over the 54-member ECOSOC six times—1955, 2005, 2020, 1952, 1957, 1975, and 2020.
Moreover, The 14 UN specialized agencies, functional commissions, and five regional commissioners coordinate their economic, social, and related operations through the ECOSOC, a main UN entity. It is the main platform for worldwide economic and social issues and policy recommendations to member states and the UN system.
