Lahore: Asim Abbasi’s highly-anticipated series, “Barzakh,” has been making waves with its star-studded cast, including Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, who reunite after their popular show “Zindagi Gulzar Hai.” The series, produced by Shailja Kejriwal and Waqas Hassan, will have its world premiere at the prestigious Series Mania festival in Lille, France, in March 2023.
In “Barzakh,” Fawad Khan plays a single parent who is charming but plagued by guilt, while Sanam Saeed takes on the central female role. The series is a family drama that delves into the supernatural, inspired by personal loss and the fear that comes with it.
The Series Mania festival, which has been running annually in Lille since 2010, brings together some of the best screenwriters, directors, and artists in the world. “Barzakh” has been selected as the only South Asian representation at the festival and has been nominated for several categories, including Best Series, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor, as well as the Student Jury award and the Audience award.
Director Asim Abbasi expressed his excitement at the selection, saying, “This story is so close to my heart and the selection of ‘Barzakh’ at the Series Mania is a humbling moment for all of us.” The series was conceived during the pandemic when traditional notions of love, life, death, and beyond were shifting. The online world, mourning, and celebrations created a sort of haze and confusion about what was real.
