Webdesk: Brad Sherman, an American Democrat in Congress, said that the former prime minister. Imran Khan, was hard to work with but that the current prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, was a little bit easier.

“Some people would say that America would support whichever political leader thought of themselves as more pro-American because it was easier for us to work with them on bilateral issues,” a US lawmaker told the House of Representatives on Saturday. “But what comes first is our commitment to democracy and rule of law,” he added.

Sherman said this about the upcoming elections: “The Supreme Court ordered elections to held in Punjab and, later, in other provinces as well. That is the rule of law.”

He said that he thinks the Supreme Court’s decision is final and can’t be changed. He also said that the top court ordered funds to be sent to the polls as needed.

“America stands not for this policy or that policy or a government that will agree with us on an issue, but for democracy and the rule of law,” he stressed.

Sherman also said that the US stands for human rights, free speech, and the right to say what you think. He worried about “terrible disappearances, human rights abuses, and substantial evidence of torture.”

The US senator called for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Pakistan. He made it clear that Washington committed to democracy and human rights and not just to short-term bilateral concerns.

Sherman talked about the national elections in Pakistan thats to take place in October. He said that nothing is more important than holding elections that are on time, follow the law, and are clear.
