“It was crazy that Russia had taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council,” said Kyiv’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. He said that this showed that the organization was “totally bankrupt.”
On Saturday, Russia took over the month-to-month presidency of the U.N.’s top security body. The last time Moscow was in charge, in February 2022, its troops invaded Ukraine in a big way.
“Unfortunately, we have some crazy and bad news,” Zelenskiy said in an evening video address. He also said that a five-month-old boy killed by Russian shelling on Friday.
“Also, Russia is in charge of the U.N. Security Council at the same time. It’s hard to think of anything that shows more that these institutions are bankrupt, “he said.
On Friday, the Kremlin said it would “exercise all its rights” in the position.
Thursday, the US asked Russia to “act professionally” when it takes over the role and said there’s no way to stop Russia from taking the job.
Zelenskiy said that all global institutions, including the Security Council, needed to be changed.
Moreover, He said, “Reform is needed to stop a terrorist state or any other state that wants to be a terrorist from destroying peace.”
Earlier, Andriy Yermak, one of Zelenskiy’s advisors, also took aim at Iran, which Kyiv and its allies say gives Russia arms. Tehran says that it is not giving Russia weapons.
“It says a lot that on the holiday of one terror state—Islamic Iran’s Republic Day—another terror state—Russia—begins to lead the U.N. Security Council,” Yermak wrote on Twitter, referring to Iran’s holiday.
