MEXICO CITY: Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City, said on Monday that shes leaving her job. It is because so she could run for president. Sheinbaum is the front-runner in the upcoming election to replace Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. She wants to be the first woman to lead Mexico, which would be a first in history.
Sheinbaum said that she wanted to change the future of the country. Her retirement will start on Friday, so she can focus on running for the Morena party, which is in power.
In the party’s primary race, Sheinbaum will be up against other well-known Morena members, such as former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and current Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez. The election for president will happen in June of the following year.
Since 2018, when he became mayor, Sheinbaum has been in charge of the huge city of Mexico City. If she wins the presidency, she’ll be the first woman to lead the country with the second-largest economy in Latin America, after Brazil.
Sheinbaum is seen as the Morena candidate who is closest to Lopez Obrador. Polling data shows that Lopez Obrador’s party is likely to keep the presidency for another six-year term, no matter who wins.
It’s important to know that a Mexican president can only hold office for one term. Sheinbaum said, “The early polls that have been done put us in first place, and I am sure that will stay the case.”
