In India, police have claimed to apprehend a gang involved in a bank robbery where they broke into lockers and stole gold worth crores of rupees. According to the police, the robbery was planned by two brothers who, after being denied a loan from the bank, recruited others and first broke the bank’s window. Then, using tools, they opened the lockers and carried out the heist.
To erase all traces, the thieves sprinkled chili powder at the crime scene and took a video recorder to conceal the CCTV footage. Despite all their efforts to cover their tracks, police managed to track down the culprits and recover the stolen gold jewelry five months later.
The police revealed that the 17 kg of gold stolen from the State Bank of India branch in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, had been hidden in a well in a nearby field.
Police IG Ravi Kant Gora stated in a press conference that six people were arrested in connection with the robbery. According to the police, this was their first crime, and they managed to steal the jewelry without leaving any evidence.
Police further revealed that the main suspect, who had been running a bakery with his father for 20 years, had applied for a loan last year, but his application was rejected. He then applied for the loan in his relative’s name, which was also rejected. Following this, the suspect decided to carry out the robbery and spent months training for it through various websites.
The investigation also uncovered that the robbers had disposed of items used in the robbery, such as caps, socks, gas cylinders, and hydraulic cutters, in a nearby lake.
