Global Execution Rate Hits Decade High, China’s Statistics Still Mysterious

Amnesty International has reported a significant rise in executions worldwide in 2024, with the number of death penalties increasing sharply.

According to the report, despite a slight reduction in the number of countries carrying out executions, 1,518 people were executed in 2024, which is a 32% increase from 2023. This is the highest number of executions since 2015, although the number of countries involved decreased from 16 to 15.

Amnesty International states that China is believed to execute the most people, but official statistics on executions are unavailable as the country considers this data a state secret.

Similarly, Vietnam and North Korea are also known to carry out executions on a large scale, but these countries do not disclose the number of people sentenced to death.
