Major Setback for Modi Government as Indian Supreme Court Halts Waqf Law

Web Desk – April 17, 2025
The Indian Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the implementation of a controversial law passed by the Modi government regarding waqf properties, seen by many as an attempt to exert control over Muslim religious endowments.

The amended law allowed the appointment of non-Muslim members — including the Chief Executive Officer — to the Waqf Board, and also gave district collectors the authority to rule on disputed waqf properties.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court against these changes. The court has now issued an interim order barring new appointments to the Waqf Board and restraining district collectors from altering the status of waqf lands until the next hearing.

The court also directed the central government to submit a detailed response within a week. The next hearing is scheduled for May 5.
