Karachi: On Tuesday, the former President of Pakistan, General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, was laid to rest at a military graveyard in Karachi. The funeral prayer took place at the Malir Cantonment’s Polo Ground and was attended by notable figures such as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad, former army chiefs General (retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa and General (retired) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, and leaders from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The deceased’s body arrived in Karachi on Monday night after several delays, having been flown in from Dubai. Before the journey to Pakistan, his body was given the Islamic ritual of Ghusl in Sonapur, Dubai. Along with the body, the ex-President’s widow and children were also flown in from the UAE. The bereaved family approached the Pakistani consulate in Dubai on Sunday for permission to transfer the body.
Musharraf had been receiving treatment for amyloidosis at the American Hospital in Dubai for an extended period of time. It is worth noting that the former President’s mother was buried in Dubai, while his father was laid to rest in Karachi. Despite the fact that Musharraf had not returned to the country since 2016, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Nawaz Sharif, and other politicians offered their condolences and prayed for his forgiveness.
