SIALKOT—Defense Pakistan’s Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that the country had defaulted on its debt. The country’s economy is in a slump, and the future of the IMF loan programme is uncertain.
Asif spoke at the annual convocation of a private college in Sialkot, where he born and raised. He said, “We live in a bankrupt country.” He said that the situation in the country was getting worse because of the establishment, the bureaucracy, and the politicians.
The PML-N leader said that the IMF programme would not solve Pakistan’s problems and that the problems could be solved from within the country. He said that Pakistan’s debt could be cut by a lot if just two golf clubs built on land owned by the government were sold. He said that if Pakistan sold these two clubs, it could pay off one-fourth of its total debt.
The defence minister also said that he was sorry that people had died in the fight against terrorism. He also said that security agencies were working together to get rid of terrorism.
He said that terrorists were allowed to move back into the country two years ago, which seemed to be a jab at the PTI governments.
