Over Ukraine, US-India “strategic ties” crack.

Webdesk: The US-India “strategic alliance” has shown fractures when New Delhi bought oil from Moscow and refused to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the UN.

Since the Ukraine war began, Russia and the west have clashed directly, forcing other states to choose sides.

According to Eurasia Review, a senior research researcher at a think tank, India, which has a strategic cooperation with the US, did not side with the west despite US efforts to encourage India to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and cease buying Russian oil.

India’s neutrality on Ukraine and continuous oil purchases from Russia have irritated the US and made India appear unreliable.

Russia sanctioned after invading Ukraine. The problem was that most European countries depend on Russian oil and gas. “We’re prohibiting all imports of Russian oil, petrol, and energy,” President Biden proclaimed from the White House in March, the second week of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “That means Russian oil won’t be accepted at U.S. ports and the American people will strike another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine.”

Washington persuaded the EU and other European partners to reduce Russian oil imports in addition to economic measures. The EU recommended banning Russian oil and gas in early May.

In early March, the US submitted a UN General Assembly resolution to punish Russia. The resolution passed, however other countries abstained.

India, a strategic partner of the US, did not criticise the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

India continues to acquire Russian oil despite US warnings. Russia earns a lot from India’s 600,000 daily oil imports. The Biden administration’s top international energy expert advised India not to boost cheap Russian oil imports, which could cause problems.
