‘Over 5,000 harassment cases in Pakistan in five years’

Islamabad: The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report ranks Pakistan 145th out of 146 countries, with Afghanistan being the worst performer.

FOSPAH reported 398 harassment cases from 2013 to 2018 and 5,008 from 2018 to 2022.

The Federal Ombudsman Secretariat reported that 1,000 courts dedicated to women’s issues in 2019 to make homes and society safer.

32% of women experience gender-based violence, while 40% of married women harassed.

After the Islamabad F-9 Park rape, women have been afraid and traumatised.

While, Two gunmen raped a woman in Islamabad’s F-9 park in February. According to the FIR, the culprits approached the victim and her colleague at the park, shocking the nation.

Moreover, Rabia Shahzad Malik, a women’s rights lawyer, claimed some cases of violence against women have resulted in convictions, fines, and life sentences.

Domestic violence and abuse laws also passed. The lawyer said 1,000 gender-related courts exist.

Malik added that public prosecutors will fight these cases for free without revealing the woman’s identify in a “short time period”.

Tasneem Ahmer, a women’s rights activist, claimed that training youngsters more vital than police in combating gender-related crimes.

According to the Islamabad Police, women are now officers and each police station has a female cell.

The report said that women police squads will patrol different areas of the federal capital to reduce crimes against women.
