Webdesk: In light of the escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, the United States has urged China to exercise restraint. It is in light of Beijing’s decision to conduct military exercises around Taiwan.
A spokesperson for the State Department emphasised that the United States prepared to fulfil its security obligations in the region. He added that communication channels with China remained open.
A State Department spokesperson quoted by AFP as saying, regarding the People’s Republic of China. “Our channels of communication with the PRC remain open. We have consistently urged restraint and no change to the status quo,”
While the United States has not stated whether it will militarily defend Taiwan. It has sold armaments to the self-governing democracy for decades in support of its self-defense.
The United States is also obligated by treaty to defend its allies in the region, including Japan, which was impacted by China’s previous military exercises around Taiwan in August.
After Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California, the announcement of China’s military exercises perceived as a “stern warning” to Taiwan.
US officials have described the president of Taiwan’s stopover in the United States as a routine transit stop on her way to or from Latin America.
The United States urged China not to overreact. McCarthy has since expressed defiance, stating that Beijing cannot dictate where he can travel or who he can communicate with.
