Beijing (News Desk) – The Canadian government recently announced that, effective October 1, 2024, a 100% additional tariff would be imposed on Chinese electric vehicles, followed by a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products starting October 22, 2024.
China strongly condemns these unilateral tariff measures by Canada, stating that they disregard objective facts and violate the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO). These actions reflect trade protectionism, constitute a discriminatory measure against China, severely infringe upon China’s legitimate rights and interests, and harm China-Canada economic and trade relations.
In accordance with the Tariff Law, Customs Law, Foreign Trade Law, and other relevant regulations of the People’s Republic of China—as well as the fundamental principles of international law—the State Council Tariff Commission, with the approval of the State Council, has issued an official announcement. Effective March 20, 2025, China will impose a 100% additional tariff on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes, and oil meals, along with a 25% additional tariff on Canadian aquatic products and meat imports.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce urged Canada to immediately rectify its wrongful decisions, revoke its restrictive measures, and mitigate the negative impact on China-Canada trade relations.
