Webdesk: On Thursday, Donald Trump surrendered to Georgia police and then surprisingly returned to Twitter, his favoured social media tool as president.
Trump turned himself in at Fulton County Jail ahead of the deadline for him and 18 of his cronies. Two hours after leaving the jail, he posted his mug shot on X. It was with a link to his website and the words “ELECTION INTERFERENCE” and “NEVER SURRENDER!”
Trump’s first platform post since January 8, 2021, was “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”
Trump returned to the platform Thursday night when Elon Musk, X’s owner, reactivated his account in November 2022.
Trump’s latest social media activity may be a one-time event or a hint of his return.
Trump has posted regularly on Truth Social since his exclusivity agreement expired in June.
Trump frequently used X, even announcing policy changes as president.
However, during his second campaign and after losing to Joe Biden, Trump utilised Twitter to promote false election involvement claims. As well as to urge his followers to act.
His plans to rig the 2020 election may involve illegal activity using those posts. A search warrant allowed special counsel Jack Smith to examine Trump’s account and private correspondence.
After the US Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, Trump’s use of the platform resulted in his “permanent suspension” under the company’s prior management, which Musk later lifted.
