Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said democracy in Pakistan is at “an all-time low” in his first extended interview after bail.
After gaining legal relief, the former prime minister declared the judiciary the “only hope” for restoring people’s rights and liberties.
Democracy is low. “The judiciary is our only hope,” the PTI leader told Sky News on Sunday.
He also voiced concern about the country’s unparalleled infringement of fundamental rights.
The PTI leader recounted how police invaded his home twice and took him into jail.
He called one of these raids a “unprecedented and unsettling situation” when the police knocked down his house’s doors in his wife’s presence.
The former premier noted that 150 cases lodged against him. He said that highlighting Pakistan’s weakening democracy.
Khan also accused the government of fearing elections since the ruling alliance expected a major loss.
“The government is petrified of elections and they fear wiped out by the PTI in the polls, Khan said.
Khan said the ruling alliance would only hold elections if he imprisoned or assassinated, demonstrating the political climate’s animosity.
The PTI head reported two assassination attempts, creating safety concerns.
The cricketer-turned-politician condemned all violence when asked about party worker protests after his arrest on May 9.
“Some individuals resembling commandos suddenly appeared at the time of his arrest,” he claimed, recalling a moment of confusion. They came to protect me.” Khan immediately realized they were after him.
Khan said a judge ordered him security due to life threats. He said the “shocking and abrupt” incident made him think a terrorist was in the room before realizing he was the target.
