Islamabad: On Tuesday, former Prime Minister Imran Khan once again requested an exemption from personal appearance in the Toshakhana case due to health reasons. The case, which was set for the framing of charges on February 7 by a district and sessions court in Islamabad, was put on hold after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader’s lawyers filed a new petition for exemption.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had filed a reference in November of last year, asking the court to proceed against Khan under criminal law for allegedly providing false information about gifts received from foreign dignitaries during his time as Prime Minister. The ECP requested that Khan be convicted for offenses under sections 167 (corrupt practice) and 173 (making or publishing false statements or declarations) of the Elections Act 2017.
According to records, the state gifts were purchased from the Toshakhana for 21.5 million rupees based on their assessed value, while they were valued at approximately 108 million rupees.
