The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan has strongly criticized the Sindh government’s introduction of heavy traffic fines and a new demerit points system, calling it an unjust move that burdens Karachi’s already struggling citizens. Party lawmakers stated that before imposing penalties, the government should focus on improving the city’s roads, traffic management, and infrastructure.
MQM representatives said that Karachi, the country’s economic hub, continues to suffer from poor road conditions, malfunctioning traffic signals, and inadequate urban facilities. They added that imposing heavy fines in such circumstances is not only unfair but reflects the government’s administrative failure.
The lawmakers further noted that the demerit points system is implemented in developed countries only after citizens are provided with safe and modern infrastructure — something Karachi still lacks. They warned that such fines would only increase public frustration instead of improving compliance.
MQM demanded that the Sindh government reduce the penalties, enhance the training and accountability of the traffic police, and prioritize awareness campaigns along with the repair and restoration of city roads. The party also called for transparency in the use of development funds and an independent probe into corruption allegations.
