Actor and singer Komal Rizvi recently shared her experience of early marriage and the abuse she faced in a revealing interview on the Nadir Ali Podcast. Rizvi spoke about the pressure faced by women in Pakistani society to marry young and the toll it can take on their personal growth and well-being.
According to Rizvi, she was taught from a young age to prioritize her husband’s needs and comply with the wishes of his family, without being taught to establish boundaries. She recalls feeling helpless in the face of physical and psychological abuse from her ex-husband and believing that she needed to try harder to make the relationship work.
In the interview, Rizvi emphasizes the importance of educating women about drawing healthy boundaries and the dangers of tolerating abuse. She reflects on the four years it took her to realize that the abuse was not her fault and laments that she wasn’t taught earlier about the importance of standing up for herself. Despite her difficult experience, Rizvi expresses happiness about her divorce and looks back on her marriage with only one regret – wasting her youth on someone who hasn’t changed.
The singer also highlights the lack of support she received from authorities when she tried to seek help, with the police in Oman declining to intervene in what they referred to as a “domestic matter”.
