After Spain won the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, RFEF president Luis Rubiales apologised for kissing star player Jenni Hermoso.
A global reaction followed Rubiales, 45, kissing Hermoso on the lips when she won her medal.
In a Spanish TV footage, Rubiales remarked, “Certainly I made a mistake and I have to acknowledge that.”
Its done in the midst of extreme excitement without malice. Here it was regular, but outside it made a ruckus.”
He stated that he had to apologise, learn from this, and more careful when representing the federation.
Spain’s sports minister demanded Rubiales’ apologies on Monday.
Spanish public radio said acting minister Miquel Iceta: “I think it is unacceptable to kiss a player on the lips to congratulate her.”
Iceta added: “It’s logical and reasonable for him to explain and apologise first.”
The minister noted that while the world cup win against England was “a moment of intense emotions”, public authorities “have to be extremely careful because we are giving a message to society and the message is equal rights, it is respected”.
On Monday, Rubiales said he had a “magnificent relationship” with Hermoso.
The Spanish athlete remarked, “Hey, I didn’t like it, eh,” when answering questions about the incident in an Instagram live video uploaded by Spanish journalist Irati Vida on X.
On Sunday, Hermoso said on Cadena COPE’s “El Tiempo de Juego” that “she didn’t expect it” but that “it was because of the emotion of the moment, there’s nothing more there” about the kiss. Just a time-related anecdote. I doubt it will escalate.”
When Radio Marca enquired about the event, she said, “The kiss with Jenni?” There are fools everywhere. We can’t listen to ignorance when two people share a moment of affection without importance. I stick to becoming champions.”
