LONDON: Around 25,000 people celebrated Eid in Trafalgar Square, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan gave former US President Donald Trump a selfie with diverse communities.
The mayor said that Muslims and non-Muslims had come together in large numbers to celebrate Eid and enjoy London, but hateful people want to divide communities over religion and culture.
Khan ended his speech by asking the crowd to send a selfie to Donald Trump to show diversity and multiculturalism.
Trump repeatedly attacked Khan, but Khan also attacked Trump.
While, Khan said at Eid: “I know somebody who knows me well. I’m his obsession. I’ll give him a photo this year. This person thinks Westerners can’t be proudly Muslim. This person thinks British Muslims are incompatible. He wanted all Muslims expelled from America. I want a selfie for his comeback tour.”
Moreover, The mayor said Eid in the Square showed Islam’s diversity and London’s “greatest city.”
“We have a prime minister who is Hindu, we have a King who is Christian, we have a London mayor who is Muslim showing our diversity and the good news is Bollywood has announced they are remaking Amer, Akbar and Anthony [a Bollywood film about three estranged brothers who grow up in families of three different religions].”
“This month we show the best of Islam,” he said. The Quran says Allah created tribes and nations to know each other. Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Jews celebrate Eid on the Square.
At noon, musicians, comedians, and speakers read the Quran on Nelson’s column stage.
Trafalgar Square celebrates Eid a week later. Pakistan, India, Somalia, Uzbekistan, and others provided music, poetry, comedy, and food trucks. Pakistani and Afghan dancers showcased local culture.
This year’s theme supported Sadiq Khan’s “Love For Everyone” family and community celebration campaign.
