U.S. Tariff Hike on China a Betrayal of Goodwill, Says Chinese Foreign Ministry

Beijing (News Desk): Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a daily press conference, responded to the U.S. decision to impose an additional 10% tariff on China over fentanyl-related concerns. He reiterated that China has consistently opposed such measures, emphasizing that the country’s countermeasures are entirely legitimate and necessary to safeguard its rights and interests.

On Tuesday, the spokesperson stated that, out of humanitarian considerations and friendship with the American people, China has taken effective steps to assist the U.S. in addressing the fentanyl issue. He noted that various sectors of American society have expressed their appreciation for China’s efforts on multiple occasions.

In this context, the U.S. has resorted to smearing China, exerting pressure, and engaging in blackmail through the imposition of additional tariffs. According to the spokesperson, this approach is a case of responding to goodwill with hostility and will neither resolve America’s internal challenges nor foster constructive dialogue on drug control between the two nations.

He reaffirmed that the Chinese people will not be intimidated by any form of coercion. He stressed that pressure, threats, and intimidation are not the correct ways to address disputes with China. If the U.S. genuinely seeks to tackle the fentanyl crisis, it should engage in dialogue with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and cooperation.

Should the U.S. harbor ulterior motives or persist in pursuing a tariff war, trade war, or any other form of confrontation, China will stand its ground to the very end. The spokesperson urged Washington to return to the path of negotiations and cooperation at the earliest opportunity.
