Lahore (NNI) Pakistan has joined the world’s fastest-growing rooftop solar markets. According to energy think tank “Amber”, Pakistan’s imports increased from about 3.3 GW in 2022 to 19 GW in 2023 and remained at about 17 GW in 2024.

By mid-2025, Pakistan had joined the world’s top three solar importers, with more than 10 GW of Chinese solar equipment imported in the first four months of the year alone. According to experts, Pakistan imported about 16.6 to 17 gigawatts of solar panels in 2024, while it remained at about 18 gigawatts in 2025, taking the total imports to about 51.5 gigawatts by the end of 2025. However, the officially registered rooftop solar capacity is only between 5.3 and 6.8 gigawatts in 2025, indicating that a large portion of the likely 24 gigawatts is either off-grid or operating outside net metering. This rapid expansion is not limited to urban rooftops, but solar is also becoming a part of daily agricultural and domestic life in rural areas.
